The 31st Annual Emmy Awards (Primetime) originally aired Sunday, September 9th 1979.

Since 1949 The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has presented awards for exceptional performances, programming and developments in the field of television.

Actors Ricardo Montalban and Hervé Villechaize were presenters in the category of Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, Kristy McNichol won for her work on the television series Family. This was Kristy's third Emmy nomination (and second win) in three years. Her fellow nominees in this category were Linda Kelsey and Nancy Marchand both for the series Lou Grant.
