The Golden Girls: Witness originally aired Saturday, March 9th 1991. A huge hit from the very first episode in 1985, The Golden Girls combined creative, topical (and most importantly) funny scripts with what would have to be one of the best ensemble cast of actors ever put together on television. The result, one of the finest situation comedies to come out of that decade and an example of how wonderful television can be when everything is done right. But as is the case with most great tv shows it was the stars of this outstanding comedy that set it head and shoulders above its many competitors. The four main stars, Bea Arthur as the intellectual Dorothy, Rue McClanahan as the over sexed Blanche, Betty White as ditzy Rose and newcomer Estelle Getty as the unrestrained Sophia are perfectly cast in their respective parts and worked so well together that all of this delightful comedy seemed almost effortless (which we know is not the case). This involving comedy about four completely different ladies all living together in their latter years, thru good times and bad is truly classic television, tv comedy at its best. In this episode Blanche (Rue McClanahan) is trying to gain entrance into an elite club for cultured and pedigreed southern ladies, unfortunately she finds her heritage is not as pure as she was lead to believe and that leaves her with a major dilemma. Meanwhile Sophia (Estelle Getty) has lost her glasses and is nearly blind without them; so desperate to find them she even involves everyone's favorite neighborhood police officer (Kristy McNichol). Rose (Betty White) is dating again and trying to forget about Miles (Harold Gould), the man that she really loves. He is gone, in the witness protection program and on the run from mob boss Karl "The Cheeseman" (Barney Martin). Just as Rose is getting on with her life Miles returns, he just can't stand another second apart from her and is even willing to risk his life to be with her again. He comes back and surprises Rose and her new boyfriend, but Rose's new boyfriend also has a surprise of his own. Kristy McNichol has a cameo part reprising her role as Officer Barbara Weston from the hit spin off series Empty Nest. It is a small but funny part that not only gives her a chance to work with some truly great comic talent but to showcase her own ample comic abilities as well. Buying note: This episode is now available as part of the DVD box set The Golden Girls: The Complete 6th Season which has just been released on home video. 11-15-2006 |
