The Mike Douglas Show originally aired on Tuesday, May 16th 1978 (in most markets). It took former big band singer and pop music vocalist Mike Douglas to show America what a daytime talk show could be. With lively conversation, interesting musical, comedic and dramatic performances and an thoroughly entertaining, charming and disarming host this program would become the place to be on daytime tv. For over 20 years and over 5000 episodes it became the place that rock stars, television stars, movie stars, sports stars, politicians and even Presidents couldn't resist appearing. For many, The Mike Douglas Show would become and will always be the standard of daytime talk programs. For the entire week of May 15th thru the 19th 1978 The Mike Douglas Show was being broadcast from the Las Vegas Hilton. Burt Reynolds was also co-host the entire week promoting his new comedy, The End, which had just opened in theatres on May 10th. Several of Burt's co-stars from the film would also appear on the show during the week. The guests this day included singer Engelbert Humperdinck, comedian/director Mel Brooks and a skateboarding performance group. Kristy McNichol also made a special appearance to help promote The End as well as her new album Kristy & Jimmy McNichol that she had just finished with her big brother. Another interesting episode of this program featuring a short but memorable interview with Kristy, giving us a chance to see her beyond the normal television venue that we were used to. This was one of many appearances that Kristy made on The Mike Douglas Show both as a guest or "co-host", she and Mike seemed to have a genuine friendship and always appeared happy to work with one another, this episode is no exception. Kristy and Burt also seemed to really like one another and in fact appeared to have very much enjoyed their time working together, neither could hardly contain their admiration for the other. Some other noteworthy items that we learn here were Burt's confession that he would very much like to have a wife like Kristy and her unswerving opinion that he looked like a G.I. Joe® doll. We also learn that Kristy was at the time dating the son of actor Nick Adams (Jeb Adams) much to Burt's distress. Kristy also "sang" her first single from the album, He's So Fine, even dedicating the song to Burt! Buying note: This show has never been available on commercial home video. But there are other sources for this as well as other Kristy McNichol appearances that you might be looking for. 8-20-2007 |

Trivia: The song He's So Fine, which was the first single from
Kristy
and Jimmy's album was originally a hit for the all girl group The
Chiffons. Their version went to # 1 in the spring of 1963, 15 years before
Kristy's version was released.
